Baba Jubal Harris - Educator
I am a Master Teaching Artist. For more than 25 years I have collaborated with hundreds of teachers and artists to create cross-cultural curriculum connections that “relate broader education goals embedded in the core curriculum.”
My methodology, Baba Jubal’s Drum and Shekere rhythms 1-9 emphasizes process rather than product. Students learn to exercise their innate ability to think logically, mathematically and scientifically and express their ideas, passions, and feelings in an orderly way that results in works of art.
For example, while making and playing a shekere (a Nigerian rattle/idiophone), students learned how and why shekere polyrhythmic music is similar to particle wave quantum physics.
With my method, students meet and exceed standards for math, science, music and art. I have used this approach to teach cognitive skills, inner-city first graders learned multiplication and division, second graders learned to solve elementary algebraic equations, and third graders understood and applied solar technology.

I believe my approach works because it inspires a thirst for knowledge that develops feelings and reasoning. Both are needed to produce a balanced, educated human being. |
